Fun With The 6 String Banjo
If you've not listened to this, do youself a favour and get a copy. I was thinking about getting a 6 string banjo as a break instrument in a set pertty much dominated with acoustic and electric guitar in all sorts of styles. This tutorial by Steve has convinced me I'm in the right track. It's not one of Steve's many DVDs but a pair of CDs and a PDF book to go wht the recordings. At first I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't a DVD (I actually put it straght into my DVD drive on the computer and was traeted to the tracks and a visual of the wave form across the sceen - dah!). But actually it's so much content and support material it's well worth getting a copy and getting down to some new twangy, banjo stuff. There's two CD lasting over 40 minutes each. And the PDF document on disc 2 is 103 pages long - so this isn't material you'll get through in a couple of days. As a guitar teacher I can see some of my beginners still on this in 6 months and the intermedaites would still be working after 2 or 3.
Steve gives you the lowdown of getting a six string banjo - but all the details are from the deering range. So if you're into getting the real thing then this will be very useful - for me I'm going to opt of something less expensive and work my way up to a deering in the future. There's also some background info Steve gives us to get started - but the body of this document is mainly instruction on the songs - 90+ pages.
I picked up some confusing info and thought this would be distributed by Mel Bay - but I got my copy direct from Steve's website here - must have misread something somewhere - but no problems buying direct anyway.
If you want anymore info get in touch with Faltpik or give me an email at coach@chrisdowning.co.uk and i'll give you some guidence on this one.
A Cheap 6 String Banjo?
Well I'd always say, get the best you can afford. You'll find your ear will get pretty tired of listening to a cheap instrument. Not to say there aren't a lot of playable instruments for $500, but you get what you pay for.
Consider this. If you buy an instrument and keep it for ten years, that's 3650 days. A dollar a day gets you a $3500 instrument and 50c, a $1750 one. Get my drift? I've got guitars I bought 30 years ago and they've been a great investment, I've earned money using them and they are still worth more than I paid for them. And I've missed out on getting what I should have bought 30 years ago as well. (Would it have really broken the bank to pay 15c a day for 30 years to own a nice Martin?)
Consider a nice instrument is an investment as well as a delight to play and hear. If you buy a good one and find out after trying to play it for twenty years it's not for you - you'll still get your money back, and with interest. Don't believe me? Try to buy a 60's Martin for $250.
Fun With the 6 String Banjo
Thanks Chris
This was a fun project to do. Replicating the rolls of the banjo for that bluegrass sound, the old time and Celtic plectrum banjo and then fingerpicking. What works and what doesn't? That is the question. I hope you will find that all of these styles work and are a very achievable goal.

Six string banjo
I have made the mistake several times of buying a "cheaper" instrument to learn on. In my opinion--the best bet is to spend as much as you can afford, then you will not have buyers remorse when you see someone else with a better instrument or when you test play other stuff at the music store. I own 15 guitars currently--and find the 7 or so $1000 plus guitars I own do not compare to the $400 to $600 guitars. I have phased out all of my sub $400 guitars. RE: the six string banjo---I really recommend going for the Deering B6. Musicians Friend has this for about $1500. See my review at musicians friend website. I am glad that I did not buy a lesser 6 string banjo and love the way it plays & sounds. The upside--is that I have no desire to buy a "better" or more expensive 6 string banjo. Hope you find this information helpful--and good luck with your playing.
