Clinch Mountain Backstep
Hi Friends
Happy Summer to you. A friend emailed me today about wanting a song that I had tabbed out on my Flatpicking Banjo Tunes (Killer version). Here is a fairly straight forward version to get you going. Check out Flatpicking Banjo Tunes by clicking my Catalogs page to the left. 15 or so All Time Great Banjo tunes that you should know.
This is a great Ralph Stanley tune (I think) Clinch Mountain Backstep. Best I can figure it is called Backstep because of the extra 2/4 measure in the [B] section.
I have marked all the fingerings in the areas for you to watch out for. You should find this helps greatly. Watch out also for the many hammer ons.
Measure 4: The first note is hit with the index left hand then switch to this stretched out D7 position with the fingerings marked. Then slid the index into the 3rd fret to kick off the next measure.
Measure 6: The end of this measure has a hammer on 1st to 3rd fret then hold it into the next measure. With your foot tapping and going into measure 7, Tap Once for the held note then continue picking.
Measure 19 has a bend or choke note on the Bb with the fourth finger. Choke it good and bluezy!
Rhythm - [A] Section: Something I do instead of staying on the G for the long stretch, I play it like Wheel Hoss. GF/G/ GF/ D7/ GF/G/D7/G/
On the [B] section I use an F to D7 at the back step. Most just use a D and it would be either /F rest D7 rest/ or /D7 rest D7 rest/
Have fun with this tune and let me know how it treats you.
Best
