Seems like guitar pickers are always looking for some magic thing to take their playing to new levels. I beleive the picks are a scam to capitalize on this "magic" theory. I have used them all
and my tone , speed or accuracy has not improved. Although I must say that I used a Wegen pick d it tends to make your stringed instrument louder.

Technique thru experimentation with your right hand will make more of a difference than a pick. Of course the people that buy them try to justify them because they paid a lot of money.

I use different picks for variety of sounds and type of music played.
Example, I use a 1.0 Clayton or some other brands because I need to project in a Bluegrass
hot picking situation. Steves picks or others in the 80s range work for me when picking with a few people and I need tone more than volume or I am miked on-stage.

I just used a wooden pick that someone is making out of the wood left over from his luthier work
at the Florida Folk Festival. Pretty pick but.....

For me , its a gimmick. It will not replace working on proper right hand technique and changing or smoothing down your current pick often.

You expensive pick holders can beat me up at Kamp this year.

All - thanks for your thoughts. I finally gave in and bought a couple of Blue Chip picks (TD35 and TD40) these are the standard teardrop shape like the 'yellers' with thickness of 1.0mm (0.040") and 0.88 mm (0.035"). I really liked the way they sounded and feel, but after many years of playing with yellers they were too stiff for me (I Liked the 35 a lot more than the 40). So, with fine sandpaper (and buffing after), a micrometer, and patience; I ground the 40 it down to 0.029" (0.73 mm) and the stiffness was then very similar to yellers. The flex felt right when playing, but the playing is still very different, principally because of much lower friction as the pick passes over the strings (the material surface is much harder than yellers and feels almost a little bit oily, like it is lubricated). The reduced friction has two consequences:

(1) Playing is significantly faster, smoother, and more accurate. Before trying, I didn't think this could really make all that much a difference, but it does. As an analogy, think of the difference between driving on a gravel road and a smoothly engineered freeway.

(2) Tone is significantly different. A pick with friction will push (and vibrate) the strings primarily sideways. An ideal frictionless pick will only push the strings up-and-down as the pick passes through. If you think about the guitar geometry this will obviously (as least to me as a physicist) give much better coupling of the string vibration to the top. Resulting sound seems much fuller/warmer (and louder) without loosing the brightness of a thinner pick. Only down side to this is that if your have low action on your guitar, you may be more prone to buzzing when playing hard.

There are other important features.

* Extremely durable - a have seen no wear at all, and if anything the playing edges seem to self polish with playing.

* Although the material feels slick and oily on the strings and to a light touch, if you grip/squeeze it hard for a moment it feels the oiliness goes away and it is almost like it bonds to your skin. I find that there is significantly less slippage during play and that I don't have to grip nearly as hard to keep it in place (also good for speed).

* Worst thing is the chocolate brown color - very easy to misplace, especially around woodwork.

I've been playing for quite a while now and always used regular picks from Dunlop that cost me about 30c each cause I buy about 100 at a time. They always manage to get away from me though - mostly my youngest students talk me into giving them a pick. Hard to resist a 5 year old!

I think it's mostly technique you need to develop not expensive kit. Stick with what you know, stay in the average zone - about .71- .75mm - and make sure they are color you can see. If you develop a standard hold on the pick you won't drop them either.

I Usually Get Paid for What I do - Not What I Spend

My problem with the expensive picks are that they don't have homing devices in them. Regardless of the care I give, sooner or later they get lost, washed, flushed, or filched. I would rather lose a half dollar pick than a thirty dollar pick.....plus, do they REALLY sound that much better. Maybe only if you have already paid your $35.00.

I've used the "Steve's Too Thin Yellow Picks" .73 since the 70's. I have other picks of larger expense. Though I own no Red Bear picks nor will I ever play with one......
There is really not a need other than collectability to own shell picks. The Blue Chip is a cool pick and may out last 50 yellers and if that is the case is worth $35. It is a very slick pick and a neat new idea so you may want to try it.
Yellers work great for me.
