Steve Kaufman with Special Guest Red Rector

When I first moved to the Knoxville, TN area I was about 19 years old and ready to take on the world. I was asked at some point to play on the Cas Walker Home and Farm Hour TV show. This is where I first met mandolin great - Red Rector. We hit it off great. He and his wife "Parker" invited me over for dinner and the long lasting friendship was born. Soon after I met Red I invited him to record with me. The project came out originally on vinyl and quickly went out of print. Red Rector passed away in 1990. He was a National Treasure. So not wanting to see this great mandolinist's work lay, I stripped off all the other instruments from the recordings. What you hear, due to modern recording technology, are Red's original tracks and my new ones.

Here are Dan Crary's original liner notes from the original album:

One night in the summer of 1977 I had a chance to sit down and join with some fine guitar players in Knoxville, Tennessee. One of the things I remember about that gathering is the looks of respect and awe several of the pickers gave Steve Kaufman when he came over and sat down. I soon found out why: Steve is one of the best young flatpickers in the country. And along with his flair for the hot and flashy, he has some additional ammunition like power, clarity and musical taste. All those things make him an out-of-the-ordinary guitar man from the ranks of the thousands of people interested in flatpicking these days. So when I got a tape of the album I was excited to hear it, and I wasn't disappointed. The music is upbeat hot and melodic. When it is over you feel like you've heard the tune and you've learned a couple of things about guitar and mandolin playing and you've enjoyed yourself besides. Steve and Red Rector are a great combination, and the whole effect of this session is very impressive, and a lot of fun. (Now why didn't I think of doing that on Beaumont Rag?)

Dan Crary
Los Angeles, Dec. 1977

Steve Kaufman is one of those guitarists who are dangerous for amateur guitarists to listen to-they may be just as likely to go burn their guitar as practice harder after hearing him play. This album might be safe because there's a mandolin player on it, so they could take up a new instrument-oops, too bad; he's a really good mandolin player, too. If Steve Kaufman's name doesn't ring a bell, he will likely appeal to fans or folks like Doc Watson, Dan Crary, and Tony Rice. This album was originally recorded in the late 70s and has long since been out of print. Kaufman resurrected it, stripped off everything but the mandolin parts played by Red Rector, and added his own new guitar parts to it. There's quite a lot of hot flatpicking, though Kaufman isn't one of guys who only play stunt guitar: There are several tunes played slow and sweet, and even a couple of humorous tunes thrown in for good measure.       Dirty Linen
